Urethane Cement
(also called urethane concrete) This is the heavy duty 4 wheel drive style of epoxy coatings. It's used primarily in food and beverage processing - commercial kitchens, breweries, meat processing plants. It's thicker than most epoxy coatings (ups to 1/4" thick) and can handle very heavy use. Excellent staining, abrasion, and impact resistance. Provides 10-20 years of good service, depending on amount or wear and tear.
Flake Flooring
The flake floor is an extremely versatile type of floor. It can handle regular vehicle traffic as well as heavy foot traffic, has excellent staining resistance, and is easy to clean. Typical uses: retail, lobbies, bathrooms, break rooms, and light manufacturing.
Flake Color Options
Quartz Floor
This type of floor has colored sand media in the epoxy and is an aesthetically appealing floor. Used for commercial situations where there is heavy foot and/or vehicle traffic. It's approx. 1/8" thick and is typically done with a polyaspartic topcoat like the flake floor. Also has excellent staining, abrasion, and impact resistance.
Stained Concrete
Both residential and commercial. Gives a unique look to the floor - sort of like stained wood. Good for foot traffic, but not designed for vehicle traffic. Each stained floor will have its own character - no two will look exactly the same. Good for restaurants, retail, office, and also residential basements.
Stain Color Options
Polished Concrete
This is literally polishing the concrete to produce a very smooth and hard surface. Used primarily in commercial settings - offices, retail, restaurants, schools. It's a relatively low maintenance floor compared to carpet and tile. Different levels of polished concrete can be done, depending on desired gloss/shine level. Each polished concrete floor will have its own unique look, based on the characteristics of the concrete.
Specialty Coatings
We can provide floors for very specialized applications: Clean Rooms, chemical labs, anti-static. These are typically single color floors and smooth with little or no texture.

What is epoxy flooring?
In commercial settings, epoxy and other resinous coatings are used to turn bare concrete into a seamless, easy-to-clean, more durable working surface. The best fit depends on activities going on in the area, chemical exposure, moisture, slip-resistance needs, cure-time requirements, and appearance goals. What are the best commercial/industrial epoxy floor coatings?
The best coating is the one that matches the way the space is used every day. For light to medium duty manufacturing areas, high-build epoxy systems are a strong value because they offer good durability, chemical resistance, and a professional finish. For more demanding situations like food and beverage processing or commercial kitchens, Denver Floor Coatings generally recommends urethane cement because it is thicker and built for extreme use. Specialty coatings are also available to handle specific requirements for chemical resistance, clean rooms, and electro-static dissipating.
How do I know which flooring contractor and which type of flooring to choose?
It’s important to choose a flooring contractor who has the ability to match the flooring type to your specific needs – ie, they should have multiple types of floors in their toolbox. And they should be able to articulate why a particular type of floor is well suited to your needs. The contractor should also be stressing the importance of proper floor prep – either diamond grinding or shot blasting. At Denver Floor Coatings, proper floor prep is treated as the most important factor in getting a good job done – if the floor takes longer to prep, installers are specifically instructed to take the extra time needed to get good prep work done before coating. This will prevent peeling/lifting of the floor coating – the most common failure mode for epoxy/resinous coatings.
What are the most common pitfalls associated with epoxy/resinous floor coatings?
By far, the most common problem with epoxy/resinous floors is peeling/lifting of the floor coating due to poor floor prep. Either diamond grinding or shot blasting is required to open up the concrete surface so it will accept a good bond with the coating material. Another problem seen quite often is installing the wrong type of floor for the situation – most often its a floor not durable enough for the environment.
How long does it take to install an epoxy/resinous floor?
The amount of time it takes depends on size of the floor and also the type of floor. For coatings offered by Denver Floor Coatings, installation time can be as fast as 1 day for smaller floors, and up to 2 weeks for larger floors. Installation can be phased to minimize business disruption.
Is this 100% polyaspartic or a polyurea/polyaspartic hybrid?
We use 100% polyaspartic in both coating layers. Polyaspartic is required for the topcoat because it offers better stain and abrasion resistance than polyurea or epoxy. For the base coat, polyaspartic, polyurea, and epoxy can all perform well when the floor is properly prepared. The most important factor is a thorough diamond grind, since poor prep leads to poor adhesion regardless of coating type. Polyurea and epoxy are often used in the base layer mainly to reduce material costs.
What are the advantages of polished concrete?
Polished concrete provides a tough, easy-to-clean surface that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. It also has high light reflectivity, which can “brighten up” a space. It can be more cost-effective than other types of flooring, since it uses the existing concrete surface.
How do you polish concrete?
Polishing is done with a planetary grinder/polisher, and it takes multiple process steps to take the floor from raw concrete to a finished surface. It starts with diamond grinding to cut through the top surface layer and expose aggregate, then more grinding to start “smoothing” the concrete, and then several passes over the concrete with polishing pads to actually polish the concrete. The floor is hardened with a densifier during the polishing process and then sealed with what’s referred to as a “guard” in the industry. Its a labor-intensive process that requires a specific skill set to provide a good looking finished floor.
What's the difference between sealed concrete and polished concrete?
Sealed concrete typically consists of diamond grinding, performing repairs and filling joints, smooth grinding, densifying (hardening) and then applying a clear sealer. Polished concrete, while it starts the same way as sealed concrete with diamond grinding, goes much further by actually polishing the concrete in successive steps to a higher level finish. Both are very suitable floors for a variety of situations. Polished concrete is more expensive than sealed concrete, primarily due to the higher labor requirements. Denver Floor Coatings offers both sealed concrete and polished concrete, and we work with our customers early in the process to help determine which type of floor best meets their needs.
What are the advantages of stained concrete?
Staining concrete adds character and color to the floor. It also give the floor a unique look, as no two stained floors look exactly the same. Denver Floor Coatings has a wide variety of stain colors, as well as a varioety of clear sealers to meet different requirements.
